Salary negotiation checklist

Prepare a grounded conversation about pay and the full offer.

Before you discuss numbers

  1. Clarify the complete offer. List base pay, bonus, benefits, equity if applicable, flexibility, title, scope, and review timing.
  2. Research a defensible range. Use comparable roles in the same location and level. Note the source and date of each comparison.
  3. Set your priorities. Decide your target, your minimum acceptable package, and the one or two terms that matter most.
  4. Gather evidence. Prepare examples of the outcomes you can deliver in this role. Your request should be tied to value and market context, not a personal expense.

Your offer worksheet

Base salary: __________ Bonus or incentive: __________

Benefits and time off: __________________________________________

Market comparisons and dates: __________________________________

My priorities: 1. __________ 2. __________ 3. __________

Questions I still need answered: _______________________________

During the conversation

Start with appreciation and enthusiasm, then ask a clear question. One possible phrasing: “I’m excited about the role and the work we discussed. Based on the scope and the comparable roles I found, could we discuss a base salary closer to [your researched target]?” Pause and listen. If base pay cannot move, ask which other terms may be flexible.

Before accepting

Request the complete terms in writing and check the decision deadline. Make sure any agreed changes appear in the final offer. Take the time you need to understand the package before responding.

This is a general planning worksheet, not individualized legal or financial advice. Compensation varies by employer, location, and role.
